In 1964, a group of people interested in astronomy led by Gerhard Franz founded the Tirschenreuth Observatory. With the help of many donors and local companies, a handsome observatory with a dome was finally created. The founder Gerhard Franz built a 20-centimeter Newton telescope on a heavy mount with his own hands and with the support of the Hamm company.

The Gerhard Franz Observatory in Tirschenreuth, founded in 1964, offers all visitors - whether amateur astronomers or amateurs - a deep look into our universe. The modern main telescope, newly installed in 2007 with a 60 centimeter optical diameter and a six meter focal length, like the other telescopes, offers an incomparable view of the stars. The main telescope is one of the largest, publicly accessible telescopes in Bavaria!
