In 1964, a group of people interested in astronomy led by Gerhard Franz founded the Tirschenreuth Observatory. With the help of many donors and local companies, a handsome observatory with a dome was finally created. The founder Gerhard Franz built a 20-centimeter Newton telescope on a heavy mount with his own hands and with the support of the Hamm company.
Since then, the observatory has developed primarily as a tourist magnet. People who take the opportunity to get to know practical astronomy while on vacation.

The Gerhard Franz Observatory in Tirschenreuth, founded in 1964, offers all visitors - whether amateur astronomers or amateurs - a deep look into our universe. In addition to lectures on current topics, the focus is on the possibility of “seeing” the universe with one's own eyes through the telescopes of the observatory. Even on cloudy evenings you can spend fun and interesting hours at the observatory!

The modern main telescope, newly installed in 2007 with a 60 centimeter optical diameter and a six meter focal length, like the other telescopes, offers an incomparable view of the stars. The main telescope is one of the largest, publicly accessible telescopes in Bavaria!
