Tips

  • Liebenstein memoryThe Liebenstein reservoir (colloquially "Hochwasserspeicher Liebenstein" or "Reservoir Liebenstein") is an artificial reservoir near Liebenstein (district of the municipality of Plößberg in the Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth) created for flood protection. The reservoir is fed by the Tirschenreuther Waldnaab flowing in from the east and the Geisbach coming from the south.
The reservoir has a flood retention area of 3.5 million cubic meters, the dam is 170 m long, 18 m high and 6 m wide.
The reservoir, which was put into operation in 1967, is used for flood protection and to increase low water levels.
The generation of energy is in the hands of Bayerische Landeskraftwerke GmbH. A Francis spiral turbine is fed with seawater through a 110 m long bottom outlet tunnel. The average annual working capacity of the generator is approx. 0.57 million kilowatt hours.
During a general overhaul in 2014/2015, the turbine system was extensively serviced and the generator renewed.
During the planning, the further use of the storage facility for leisure and recreation - as was usual at the time - was given only minor importance.
However, due to its scenic location, the Liebensteinspeicher has developed into a popular local recreation area over time. The area surrounding the warehouse is ideal for boating (rowing, paddling), fishing, cycling and hiking. For many anglers, it is a guarantee for large catches of zander, carp & Co.
The extensive water change areas and wet meadow wastelands around the Liebenstein reservoir (approx. 30 hectares) offer a habitat for numerous rare plant and animal species. There are, for example, whinchats, moor frogs, adders, Bohemian sedges and mudsling. The beaver has also conquered the granary for itself.
