Hikes up Harter Fell are exactly the type of charming that only the Lake District can truly do. While the national park is full of big name peaks, it also has an abundance of lesser known fells offering outstanding hikes, gorgeous views and a feeling of serenity.

Standing over both the Eskdale and Duddon valleys, you’ll find Harter Fell immediately south of the incredible Hardknott Pass. It’s well worth driving this road as this single lane, rugged, tarmac pass is certainly an enjoyable warm-up act for the hike that climbs above it.

Starting points range from Jubilee Bridge in the north east, to the fantastically named Froth Pot in Duddon valley to the west. With a variety of trails to the summit, as well as the conifer-filled Hardknott woods to explore, you can easily ramble further, adding in more fells as you wish.

A steep climb to glorious views

The hiking trails up Harter Fell aren’t technical but this is a steep fell and there are no particularly gentle routes to the top. With a summit at 2,129 feet (649 m), the incline quickly provides some of the most incredible views in the Lakes, providing ample reasons to take a breather and admire the scenery.

A rocky fell, there are plenty of places to enjoy a bit of shelter on the summit should the wind have joined your party. Looking north, you’ll get a fantastic view of Hardknott Castle, an impressive footprint of a Roman fort laid out like it’s only just being built. Behind, the Scafells rise in the distance whilst the south east reveals the Old Man of Coniston.

Climb Harter Fell throughout the year, watching your step in winter conditions and leaving severe weather to its own business. Pubs and campsites are scattered liberally in the area and there are many villages on the way to Ambleside in the east.

Best Hikes to Harter Fell Summit (Eskdale)

Tips

  • Harter Fell is a fantastic Wainwright at 2,139 feet (654 m) in height. Many head to the trig pillar but the true summit is a short scramble onto the highest of the rocky tors, great fun in dry weather. The views across Eskdale are outstanding. Don't forget to also hike Green Crag while you're in the area.

  • A real Lake District fell, but one that can be done from Eskdale, by this route, in an afternoon or evening.
