A high-stemmed fruit tree offers habitat for many rare birds, small mammals and insects on several floors.
Shrew and field mouse live at its root, and the hedgehog also finds a suitable hiding place there. The treecreeper looks for food on the high trunk, the rare wood beetles and wasps dig their small nesting holes. The woodpecker carves out a nesting site, which later becomes a home for bats. Here you can find z. B. our smallest owl, the little owl, almost exclusively on old orchards, which is why nesting aids are also appropriate for him here.

Worth a visit are the "Bergische Obstkammern" near Leichlingen, which were founded in 973 AD. were officially mentioned. It's hard to imagine that this region still belongs to the city of Leverkusen... It's wonderfully natural here, in the middle of the countryside. A narrow dirt road leads right through fields of fruit trees. Each field is clearly marked with signs that provide information about the respective types of fruit. Old and relatively unknown apple varieties such as "Jacob Lebel" or "Zuccalmaglios Renette" are at home here.
