After the Second World War, Oldenburg belonged to the British zone of occupation. In 1945 the British military administration set up a DP camp in Wehn on the site of a confiscated Wehrmacht camp at Oldenburg airfield. Displaced persons were accommodated there who had been in Germany at the time of the end of the war and some of whom themselves could not return to their home countries. The largest group in terms of numbers in the Wehen camp came from Lithuania. The camp was initially managed by the UNRRA (from 1947 IRO).
