The rock castle is located on the western outskirts of Hohenstein, the second highest village in Central Franconia. Its location is the summit plateau of the Hohenstein, which, at 624 meters, is the highest point in the northwest of the Pegnitz located part of the Hersbrucker Alb. The castle is based on this dolomite rock, 30 meters high and nearly vertical on three sides. It is the most distinctive landmark in the area and one of the area's best vantage points.
The first beginnings of Hohenstein Castle probably go back to the 11th century. The first documentary mention, however, is detectable only for the year 1163. In the following centuries, there were several changes of power relations: From the Sulzbacher counts she first came into the possession of the Staufer. Derived from the previously used designation of this royal dynasty, the castle Hohenstein is sometimes referred to as Hohenstaufenburg today. Later, she came, among other things, still in the possession of Wittelsbacher, the Luxembourger and in the end again in the hands of the Bavarian dukes.
