The Schalksburg is a western foothill of the Burgfeld mountain island at an altitude of 911 meters. It is a triangular rock block that can be reached from Burgfelden via a narrow ridge. Celtic finds suggest that it has been inhabited since around 1,500 BC. It was first mentioned in documents in 1226 as Shalchispurch, 1252 as Salkesburch. The complex consisted of two castles in the south towards Laufen the Grafenburg and west towards Balingen the Vogtsburg. Both were surrounded by a wall and could be reached via two drawbridges, past the large keep, which today serves as a lookout tower for the Swabian Alb Club. A section of the Eisenbartturm from the Vogtsburg has survived.
