The climb on the Swiss side is also very feasible in Gravel; the one on the Italian side has much more demanding slopes (up to 25%) and a surface that is not bumpy but loose, to be tackled only downhill and with caution.

To put it diplomatically: The Chaschauna pass at almost 2,700 meters is a lasting experience for many mountain bikers, whether they come from the Engadine or Livigno. At the Swiss National Park Bike Marathon, the climb from Livigno to the pass is the toughest test. For many Transalp bikers, the old route to the pass was a mental and physical challenge. At least the newly built path on the north side makes it much easier today.
