In the Stemmesheide in Nettetal-Lobberich there are beautiful, ancient pollard willows away from the path. They stand at land boundaries and moats in extensive grassland. Most of these trees are already mostly hollow. Here, of course, it always comes back to natural failures.
To properly chop down such very old pollard willow requires extreme caution and a lot of tact on the part of the editor.
In the area of the Stemmesheide one hears the courtship calls of the Tawny Owl annually. This big owl probably has its nesting place in one of the hollow willow trunks.
