A Leichstein erected in a historical place by the Haig Trachtenverein!

Beautiful historical reminiscence, but unfortunately only a replica of the original from the early 16th century.

The stone, originally designed as a so-called cross stone, stands on the border between the aristocracy of the Haig manor (of Waldenfels, of Würtzburg, etc.) and the Bamberg centamt of Kronach, each of which was enfeoffed by the Bishopric of Bamberg. Cross stones are primarily to be seen as boundary stones. They are often referred to as ‘light stones’ in old documents, because according to old law, the nobleman had to hand over all criminals, all murder victims, suicides and dead bodies found on these stones to the bishop’s center judge or Kronacher Stadtvogt.
Hence the derivation of the name Leichstein = "Lachstein" (boundary stone).

In Upper Franconia there are still numerous original cross stones, court stones, light stones, atonement crosses etc. (e.g. cross stones near Marlesreuth, Kauerndorf, Baumgarten, Wüstenbuchau, light stones near Schimmendorf and Burgkunstadt etc.)
