The pilgrimage has been documented since 1530.
In 1727, it flourished again because the statue of the Virgin Mary was said to have wept tears of blood. This increased the number of pilgrims, so that masses had to be celebrated several times a day, even though the church was not yet recognized as a place of pilgrimage.
