After completing the extensive renovation of the Schlackenberg, the former residue dump of the Maxhütte in 2005 - 2013, the government of the Upper Palatinate also wanted to open the landfill to the interested public under the heading of "gentle tourist use" to visit and find out about the history of the Maxhütte and also the renovation of the slag mountain in the information centers created there. The slag mountain has now become a green hill with gentle slopes and three striking elevations. In the modeling of the landfill surface, particular attention was paid to integrating the slag mountain into the surroundings from various points of view, particularly in the Sulzbach-Rosenberg cityscape. The approximately 32 hectare site is well developed with approx. 4 km of gravel paths, the "Info Center Viewpoint" directly below the summit offers an overwhelming panoramic view for the visitor and a permanent exhibition with very clear information about the history and the restoration of the slag mountain.
