In 1922, the Chicago Tribune newspaper announced a global competition for its new corporate headquarters, which was to be no less than "the most beautiful and eye-catching building in the world". A total of $100,000 in prize money was awarded, with $50,000 going to first prize.
Of the more than 260 entries, including a design by Walter Gropius, the neo-Gothic design by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howell, the architects of the American Radiator Building in New York (today the Bryant Park Hotel), won. They envisioned a Gothic Revival skyscraper with buttresses at the top, inspired by the first great Gothic Revival skyscraper, the 1913 Woolworth Building in New York, and Rouen Cathedral.
