The old quarry in the forest near Merzhausen is an idyllic place that fascinates the viewer and whose atmosphere is determined by the impressive basalt walls. The Merzhausen village association has selected this place as the third stop on the Merzhausen natural and cultural landscape trail, which will be enhanced with an information board.
On the one hand, the information sign contains explanations for the visitor about the history of the quarry from 1850 until its closure in 1964, the hard physical work of the employees and the basalt rock from a geological perspective, while the reverse points to the importance of the secondary biotope of the quarry as a habitat for endangered animals - and plant species. In order to visualize the ambience from the active management period of the quarry, a lorry with which the broken stones were transported to the loading ramp was welded onto the still existing tracks.

An old quarry in the forest that is slowly but steadily being reclaimed by nature. A lovely place to explore - with due caution of course. There is also a shelter here.

A freely accessible old quarry located in the forest. There is a refuge near the entrance and a trail leads around the entire quarry. Just don't venture too close to the edge and you should have good shoes with you.
