The Katharinenkirche was about to be demolished in GDR times and this beautiful Gothic church could only be preserved thanks to the commitment of dedicated parishioners. This commitment to the threatened church has had a lasting impact on the congregation. Today, this parish church is also a center for church music, with influence in the Altmark and neighboring Wendland.

The construction began in 1280 in Romanesque style, but counts to the brick Gothic. After partial decay, the church was extensively renovated in several sections until 2013.

The Neustadt district of Salzwedel was founded in 1247. The documented start of construction of St. Catherine's Church was in 1280. It was built as a parish church for the new town. Expansions were made at the beginning of the 14th century. A choir was built on the east side of the nave, which was higher than the nave. Around 1450 the entire church was expanded to this height. It also received a vault. The next expansions took place in 1460. The Corpus Christi Chapel was completed in 1467. A two-story sacristy extension was built on the south side; the spire was renewed. This meant that the church had almost reached its current form. The original nine stained glass windows in the choir also date from that time, three of which have been preserved. They show scenes from Genesis and the life of Christ. Since the Reformation came to Salzwedel, the parish has been Evangelical Lutheran.

St. Catherine's Church remained intact during the Second World War, but fell into disrepair in the decades that followed. On Christmas Eve 1961, the last Christmas Vespers were celebrated in the church. The church was abandoned because the walls were in danger of falling apart. After 1974, the restoration of the church began with the help of numerous volunteers. On Christmas Eve 1975, services could be celebrated again in St. Catherine's Church for the first time. In 1978 a new organ from the Potsdam company Schuke was inaugurated. During the time of reunification in 1989, St. Catherine's Church was the starting point for numerous protests. Even before the renovation work was completed, there was further structural damage in 2010, so the west hall had to be closed. The fundamental renovation of the West Hall lasted until 2013.
