At this point, on April 13, 1944, an American B-17 bomber named "Rum Pot" crashed after a three- to four-minute aerial battle. The individual parts of the aircraft were scattered over a large area. Nine men from the team of ten were able to save themselves from the burning plane by parachuting. Joseph Bedsole was the only one of the crew who did not survive the crash. He was initially buried in the Glue Mountain Cemetery and then transferred to the United States towards the end of the war.
