Heidenstein Cave

A typical Jura cave, which has been proven to have been inhabited by Paleolithic people in the last Ice Age. The 40 meter long cave is freely accessible and can be explored with a flashlight.

The Heidenstein cave is located on the eaves of the Ochenberg tour and on the MTB tour Apollo Sportrunde, near the Klarafels viewpoint and is evidence of different geological ages.
After uplift and karstification of the Jura layers, the remains of the once extensive floor clay layer were deposited in sinkholes, rock crevices and caves. This is also the case in the Heidenstein Cave, a very rich site that has been exploited since 1834 at the latest. While mining the bean ore, the workers came across the remains of a species-rich animal world of the Young Tertiary and also geologically more recent animal finds. The Heidenstein Cave is also one of only five sites where the remains of great apes have been found in Germany. The discovery of two flint blades from an excavation at the University of Tübingen in 1909 shows that hunters from the Paleolithic period visited the cave, at least temporarily.
