The Kolonnenweg is part of the inner-German border fortifications on the side of the former GDR. In contrast to the rest of the border system, the Column Path has largely been preserved decades after the end of the GDR and today serves as a hiking and cycling path along the former border. During GDR times, it was used by the GDR border troops to reach every point on the border with vehicles as quickly as possible.
Between the Kolonnenweg and the former German-German border there is a corridor between 50 and 200 m wide, the core area of today's Green Belt. After the end of the Cold War, the idea arose to protect the area as a uniform, closed network over its entire length and thus THE GREEN RIBBON. The Green Belt is the largest biotope network in Germany. 600 species threatened in Germany occur in 150 nature reserves.

The Green Belt is a 1,400 km long biotope network that stretches along the former inner-German border, from the Baltic Sea to Voigtland in Bavaria.

In this section of the trail, you can always hike sections (recommended on the circular hiking trails P5 and P12) on the column trail and green belt.

Along the former inner-German border, 1,339 km of column paths, mostly made of perforated concrete slabs measuring 300x100x19 cm, were built.
At that time, concrete slabs made it possible to build a road quite quickly, easily and durable, without asphalting an entire street.

The Green Belt runs through the whole of Germany and was the border between West and East Germany at the time of the inner-German division. Now protected as a nature reserve, for almost forty years it was 1,393 kilometers long and part of the Iron Curtain that divided Europe into two blocks.

If you hike the P5 anti-clockwise, you will reach the former Kolonnenweg shortly after crossing the border (Hesse/Thuringia). This meanders along the Green Belt and is a reminder of the times of the inner-German division.

During the hike of the P5 to/from the Plesse you inevitably hike a part of the Kolonnenweg. And yes, it's just part of it and reminds you of this old (not always nice) time of division within Germany.
Today you can enjoy the nature on the Green Belt with a laugh.
