The castle complex dates back to the 13th century. At the end of the Second World War in 1945, the castle went up in flames and remained in ruins for decades. Reconstruction started in 1982. In 2007 this was largely completed. In 2013, the "Old Castle" and a building in the outer bailey were also expanded into an adventure museum.

The relatively unobstructed view of the castle is unique in Cadolzburg - at all other locations you can only see part of the castle. For this reason, this look is actually often a motif for postcards. The slope on the right side of the road is also used as a sledge slope in winter.
