The oldest reference to a stately garden outside the Cadolzburg can be found in a register of the stately possessions (Salbuch) from 1464. The first evidence of a garden within the castle complex is provided by the drawing by Landgrave Moritz von Hessen from 1629. In this sketch the area between the horse pond and the neck ditch is called the "pleasure garden". In the 18th century, tall fruit trees were planted on the narrow meadows of the two kennels surrounding the main castle. There were also two large meadows with fruit trees outside the castle complex.
