The Rappbode Dam or Rappbodetalsperre is a built in 1952 to 1959, consisting of dam, waterworks, hydroelectric power plant and reservoir dam in the Harz, which is especially in the urban area of Upper Harz am Brocken in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt. Its maximum 106.0 meters (m) high dam, the highest in Germany, accumulates especially the Rappbode and its tributary Hassel to about 3.9 square kilometers (km²) large rapids reservoir, with 109,08 or, according to other data, 113 million Cubic meters (m³) is the volume largest Harz reservoir. The Rappbode Dam is one of the two largest drinking water reservoirs in Germany, the Great Dunkirk Dam. The Rappbode dam forms with further valley and Vorsperren as well as retention basins the Rappbode-valley barrier system for flood protection in the eastern Harz, whereby it protects the places below its retaining wall particularly at the Rappbode and serves the drinking water and electricity supply of many nearby villages.
