It begins in Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony and runs along the Werra river through northeast Hesse and western Thuringia to Masserberg.
The 128-kilometer section from Hann. Münden to Nentershausen with the special “X5 H” sign is certified as a quality hiking trail.
As early as 1885, the hiking fans of the Werra Valley Association laid the oldest section from the Wartburg in Eisenach to Hann. Münden.
