Lying just inside the Cairngorms National Park, hiking up Glas Tulaichean provides a relatively easy Munro walk with far-reaching views across the Scottish Highlands. This is a mountain of many arms splaying south from its summit while its uncomplicated northern face overlooks Gleann Mor.

A dismantled railway line leads you part of the way along the southern approach with a clear track continuing on, almost to the summit itself. These trails make Glas Tulaichean a highly achievable Munro, even for those fairly new to Highland walking. To start, you can park in the Spittal of Glenshee and walk up to the fantastic, turreted Dalmunzie Castle Hotel. Alternatively, call and ask if you can use their car park and save your feet.

From the trig point at the summit, you can descend to the north, skirting the eastern corries and returning via Gleann Taitneach. A domed mountain, there’s nothing technical lurking for winter mountaineers, and those with the experience and equipment can enjoy spectacular sights when snow falls.

Base yourself in Pitlochry or find campsites dotted around the area.

Tips

  • Glas Tulaichean is a 1,051m Munro mountain in the Scottish Highlands. It can most easily be ascended from Spittal of Glenshee. The Dalmunzie House Hotel (at the time of writing) will allow walkers to use their car park for a small fee. I saw my first eagle flying from a nest in the cliffs to the northeast of the summit of this Munro. Such a majestic sight to see. I'll never forget it.

  • From the Spittal of Glenshee, the land rover track makes an easy approach to this Munro. A bike could be taken up to some ruins, if not to the summit. Parking at the hotel is allowed with permission.
