Derry Cairngorm Summit

Hiking

5.0

(16)

A remote Cairngorm giant, hikes to Derry Cairngorm take you high amongst the vastness of the region’s unique sub-Arctic plateau. This is one of the most astonishing landscapes in Britain - worth taking your time over and savouring.

The shortest walking routes to Derry Cairngorm start from the Derry Lodge and ascend the southern ridge. Mountain bikes can be useful to speed you to Derry Lodge from Deeside. A circular route linking the mountain to Ben Macdui and Carn a’Mhaim is a magnificent, if lengthy, adventure. Approaches from the Aviemore region in the north are much longer and it makes sense to split such epic outings into two days.

Understandably, the views from this high on the Cairngorm plateau are astonishing. It is a fine vantage for gazing across to colossal Ben Macdui and the secretive Lochan Uaine that glistens beneath its eastern flanks.

In winter, the high Cairngorms are the UK’s most dangerous mountains. When full winter conditions arrive it is the preserve of experienced mountaineers only.

    Hiking

With its great summit cone rising above the foothills, many hikers on Deeside mistake Derry Cairngorm for Ben Macdui. From the 3,789 feet (1,155 metre) high summit, you are rewarded with magnificent views all around. It is one of the best viewpoints for Ben Macdui, too, seen above the grand Coire Uaine.

Another great Munro in the Cairngorms, and easily acessed from Glen Derry. A cairn marks its summit, which is scattered in boulders. Views to Ben Macdui and to Cairngorm can be seen on clear days. A circular route by the Hutchison Memorial Hut and Loch Etchachan make a good walk.
