🚲&🥾 Mt Keen from Glen Tanar

We opted for a bike & hike to Mount Keen from Glen Tanar today. Having approached it from Glen Esk a few times already, Glen Tanar was a lovely alternative. Shorter drive for us too.
We cycled until the last bridge across the Water of Tanar and left the bikes…

Ballater - Royal Lochnagar distillery - Loch Muick

Rented gravel bikes from Bikestation Ballater. We cycled to the Royal Lochnagar distillery, where we stopped for coffee and cake. Then we ascended up to Loch Muick. The track has been improved compared to last year's condition. Encountered an adder 🐍 getting some sun on the gravel. Stopped for sandwiches…

Geldie Lodge back to the car

The return cycle was a bit quicker as mostly downhill and the westerly wind helped too. Completed after hiking Càrn an Fhildhleir and An Sgaraoch.

Càrn an Fhidhleir and An Sgarsoch

Wonderful hike after a 13km cycle to Geldie Lodge. Initially a good path, followed by a boggy section before the ascent to Càrn an Fhidhleir. Mostly path from the ridge all the way over to An Sgarsoch. Only met 3 other people during the hike.

Linn of Dee to Geldie Lodge

Cycle to Geldie Lodge ruins. Bit of a wet start to the day. There are several fords after the Red Bothy. I wore light trainers and waterproof socks to easily get across the fords. Left our bikes at the Geldie Lodge ruins to hike Càrn an Fhidhleir and An Sgarsoch.

North Pier and burritos 🌯

A stroll along Aberdeen beach and visit to the North Pier. The North Pier is open 7am-7pm over the summer. A great spot to view the dolphons, which often frequent the harbour mouth. Didn't spot any today.
There are lots of food stalls along the beach. I am a fan…

Dundee to Montrose - adventure with Ember

We took the Ember bus from Montrose to Dundee, so we could cycle back, following National cycle route 1. Ember is very easy to book and great value. The bikes went into the hold this time.
We lucked out with the weather, as it was sunny all day and the…

Glas Tulaichean bike & hike 🚲🥾

We decided had planned an out and back to use the bikes and cycle in today. We parked at the hillwalkers area just inside the Dalmunzie Castle Hotel's drive. Totally missed the gate into a field with horses and ended up at the farm and cottages. A kind man pointed…

Cullen to Spey Bay return

We decided to escape the smoke from the Cairngorms wildfire 🔥, which had blown all the way to Aberdeen. Headed north due to the wind direction. Parked in Cullen and followed national cycle route 1 to Portgordon. Lovely cliff top coastal paths, partly following the old Moray coast railway line…

Great pictures - Last time I did that coast line I felt like a mouse in a washing machine. Sea jumping walls, rain coming down in buckets, wind head on and it was the day they decided to test the national warning signal on mobile phones - happy days.

Forvie and Collieston 🍦

I had been hoping for a sunny day to explore longer walks in the Forvie Nature reserve. We took the sign posted path past Hackley Bay. Lots of wildflowers 🌼! Decided to drop into Collieston, which is a cute coastal village. The harbour was busy with families. The tiny shop…

Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers

Ben Lawers is the 10th highest mountain in the UK. It is also a National Nature Reserve with rare alpine plants and lichen. We spotted a lizard, which must have been hoping for sun! There were cows used to manage the landscape. They even had cow bells 🔔.

Very busy…

Beinn a' Ghlò

Beinn a' Ghlò (hill of mist) is a ridge, which certainly lived up to its name today. Low clouds shrouded us in humid mist most of the day. Felt like a rainforest. A good chance to practice a bit of navigation.

Carn Liath (grey rocky hill)…

Drinnie's observatory and Loudon stone circle

A walk around Pitfour Estate. Drinnie's observatory can be accessed through the red door during the summer months. The forest in front has been cleared, with views towards Mintlaw, Peterhead and Fraserburgh opening up. The stone circle was a little trickier to find. There is a path just to the…
