If you intend to climb the Zugspitze from Ehrwald and descend by train, you should first inquire about the operating hours of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn. Several times a month a fondue evening takes place on the Zugspitze, where the train runs until 9.30 pm. So you can take your time on the ascent and miss the big bustle, if you reach the summit after 5pm. The course can of course be used if you do not attend the fondue evening. The ticket can be bought directly before the start of the trip at the summit. So you can admire the beautiful sunset on the Zugspitze in good weather and the summit belongs to you, with luck, all alone.
Information on the extended operating hours can be found on the page of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn under the heading "Events".

Day 3 of our mountain tour led from the Knorr hut over the Zugspitze Sonnalpin to Zugspitze, which was not planned, fresh snow in late September. OK :-) Challenge and unique experience in a well packaged under 7-10 cm of snow. Until the Sonnalpin the path was no longer recognizable by the color markings on the stones, only a few marking poles and Komoot led us over the snowy boulder field to the Zugspitzplatt. From here, the goal was to guess the via ferrata to Zugspitze, but not really watch through the snow. Again, the route guidance of Komoot, in conjunction with a Garmin Fitness clock, helped us to find the right way through the snowy boulder field to the via ferrata. Once there, we had a single image, the icicles on the ropes were not vertical, but frozen almost horizontally by the strong wind. As a result, the climb to the summit was upgraded once again, it was just GEIL :-)

You should start to the summit early if possible before the masses of "sneaker tourists" besiege the summit. ;-)The distant view is fantastic in good weather, even if it was always "whiter" on my tour. The climb over Ehrwald was worth the experience.

If you don't want to or can't do the Watzmann crossing as a "good German", there are at least two challenging but nevertheless feasible hikes to the Zugspitze. Personally, I find the "Gatterl-Tour" from Ehrwald more beautiful than over the Reintal. A lot is simply offered to the eye here. Running is also worthwhile, because the rides up to the Zugspitze are not exactly cheap and if you don't want to go sledding upstairs, you can see everything pretty quickly. You don't have to drive up for the food, which is more reminiscent of motorway service stations. But it is the best food in the world after a long climb ;-)
