There are many mountains that share this name, but this particular Càrn Dearg in a Munro that rises to the north east of Rannoch Moor and hits 3,087 feet (941 m). Immediately south of Loch Ossian, it’s connected to its sister Munro, Sgor Ghaibre, via a grassy ridge so if weather permits, it’s easy to bag two majestic Munros in one expedition.
Although in the midst of fantastically remote, road-free landscapes, Càrn Dearg is surprisingly easy to reach thanks to Corrour train station nearby. You can begin your trip right from the station or even stay in the youth hostel on the edge of the loch for a comfortable start. Alternatively, begin from near Rannoch Station, to the south – a route which enables you to cycle to the beginning of the ascent proper.
The going is grassy and sometimes boggy but fairly straightforward with nothing technical. At the summit, you’ll find an impressive cairn and exquisite views across this immense, remote terrain.
Carn Dearg is a 941m Munro mountain in the Scottish Highlands. It sits to the south of Loch Ossian and we climbed it in awful weather conditions from Loch Ossian 'green' youth hostel on a day in August 2019. Had the weather been kinder to us we would have experienced wonderful views to the surrounding hills - Bin na Lap, Sgorr Gaibhre, Beinn Eibhinn and Ben Alder.
