The future lies in the generation of electricity from renewable energies. From the end of the year, water in Erfurt will be used efficiently in a new plant. As part of the Geraaue urban development project, a hydropower plant for the Thuringian district water supply in the north of Erfurt is being built, which will be completed in spring 2020. In the future, around 1,000 two-person households will be supplied with electricity from hydropower every year. In addition, the power plant is also a viewing area, which, once completed, offers visitors an insight into energy generation.

So far, the river strands in the Thuringian capital have not been sufficient for hydropower. With the “West Ring Cascade”, electricity can now be obtained from the flow energy. In the existing double pipe system for water supply, only one pipe for drinking water supply will be required in the future. The existing and now free line is converted. Over a length of 45 km, dam water from the dams "Schmalwasser" and "Tambach-Dietharz" is used to direct the systems and generates environmentally friendly energy. The drop height of the lines of 290 m is used here.

Once in Erfurt, the water from the Thuringian Forest is fed into the hydropower plant on the northern Geraaue and the kinetic energy of the water flowing off is transferred to a turbine. This then drives an electric generator, which converts the mechanical energy of around 5000 tons of water per year into electrical energy without emissions. Water that cannot be used immediately is stored in a splash water chamber.

Very informative designed hydropower plant. With video show and porthole windows to look inside.

There are buttons to switch to video or switch on the light.
