Take a look at the fairytale fountain in front of the town hall, the so-called Donop fountain (a gift from the von Donop family). The fountain shows a spring nymph with deer and was built as a sculpture of romanticism by the Dresden master Hölbe in 1901.

In 1898 Grafregent Ernst zur Lippe gave the city's magistrate the perpetual right to use the Berlebeck springs. In 1899 a water pipe was built into the city from there, with an elevated tank on the Hiddeser Berg. On April 1st, 1900 the pipeline network with a total length of 12 km was put into operation. A good 900 of the 1,300 existing houses received a water connection. In addition, 3 public fountains - including the Donopbrunnen on the market square. Auguste von Donop (1810–1883), the widow of the court hunter Franz von Donop, bequeathed 6,000 thalers to the city of Detmold for its construction. The design was created by the sculptor Rudolph Hölbe (1848–1926), who was born in Lemgo and teaches at the Dresden Academy. In 1943 the group of bronze figures was dismantled and brought to Hamburg. There it was to be melted down like thousands of bronze bells for war purposes. Fortunately, that didn't happen. It was brought back to Detmold from the so-called Hamburg bell cemetery in 1949 and put up again in 1951. The citizens had fought for this against the will of the city administration.

        Donop Fountain - 1902 - Market Square

"which has far more dirt than houses", Albert Lortzing adds to the popular hymn to Detmold. By the end of the 19th century, Werre and many wells were heavily polluted. The fountain donated by Auguste von Donop in 1883 marks the end of this situation. The nymph in the central group of figures can be understood as a situated personification of the spring of the fountain, which draws its water from the springs of the Berlebecke in the middle of the Teutoburg Forest south of the city. During the Second World War, the fountain accidentally escaped being melted down and was rediscovered around 1947 in a bell cemetery in Hamburg. However, it was not reopened until 1951 on the old square after many years of discussion about a new market square concept.
