Perched on a hill and surrounded by terraced terrain, Valldemossa was named after the Moor Muza, who originally owned the area. With its car-free, cobbled streets and rich cultural heritage, this city is definitely worth a visit.

Valldemossa is the highest town in Mallorca and can sometimes be quite uncomfortable, damp and cold in winter. The Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and his lover, the French writer George Sand, spent the winter of 1838/9 in the monastery's rented rooms. They didn't have the most pleasant stay and Sand's book about their experience wasn't exactly Mallorca-friendly. Nevertheless, the book "A Winter on Mallorca" became a bestseller. You can buy it here on every corner and in many languages.
