The old town tower of Salzkotten is hardly to be captured figuratively.

The city fortifications with the city towers of Salzkotten were built from 1245 to 1247 under Bishop Simon I of Paderborn. Towers and gates were additionally built in the 15th and 17th centuries. Only remnants of the ring wall remain today, since the demolition of the fortifications no longer required for modern warfare began in the 18th century. The wall around the city was also filled in. Preserved parts of the city wall can still be found at the former Vielser Gate.

Originally, four fortification towers secured the city. Three of them are still preserved today: the Bürgerturm, the Hexenturm and the Westerntorturm. The Bürgerturm was built at the same time as the city wall around 1247. It is a simple, closed building on a rectangular floor plan, which ends with a gabled roof. The so-called witch tower is characterized by a stone basement and a half-timbered upper floor with brick. The origin of the name can no longer be traced today. The western gate tower has a wide passage that forms a round arch on one side and a pointed arch on the other. It ends with a tent roof.
