Many apple varieties have been replaced by the same and inexpensive supermarket goods and have almost been forgotten, which is a burden for many allergy sufferers. In the 90s, an inventory of still existing varieties was first made for the orchard country variety garden Ellern, whereby the determination alone was problematic due to the lack of documentation. From 1996/97 to 2000 the varieties found were raised as a one-year "Reiser" on "Bittenfeld Seedling" as a base for standard trees. At the end of 2000 these were then planted in the 3.3 hectare regional variety garden in Ellern. Here they are now documented in terms of growth, fruit and ingredients, through photos, a herbarium (leaf collection) and even genetic fingerprints. So it is to be hoped that many of the old and robust apple varieties will be preserved and come back to the market, if only it is the Hunsrück weekly market.Literature: lfu.rlp.de/fileadmin/lfu/Naturschutz/Dokumente/Broschuere_Streuobstwiesen.pdf
