      Before it was named Valkenstijn in the nineteenth century, it was known as the house Vredeveld. Vredeveld House had two side wings and a bell tower. This house was built in the mid-seventeenth century by Zeino Joachim van Welvelde. From 1816 it was inhabited by Petrus Hofstede, governor of Drenthe.

      In 1842 Augustinus van Valkenstijn became the owner of the estate and the estate received its current name. He and his wife are buried in the tomb that still stands today.

      Then the house fell into disrepair. It was eventually demolished in 1966.
