The Aachen – Tongeren railway line is a Belgian-German railway line serving freight transport from Tongeren in Belgium to the German station Aachen West. The further rail route from Aachen via Montzen and Tongeren to Antwerp is also known as the Montzen route. The double-track line has a track width of 1435 millimeters (standard track) and is electrified with overhead contact line. It is known as Spoorlijn 24 in the Belgian rail network of the SNCB.

On July 29, 1872, the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft put the Aachen–Bleyberg–Welkenraedt railway line into operation. Parts of this route included the 869-meter-long Gemmenicher Tunnel, which is now used by the Montzen route, as well as the ramp leading from Aachen to the tunnel with a gradient of 17 per mille.

Due to the topographically difficult conditions caused by the Ronheid ramp on the line between Aachen and Liège, which was completed in 1843, the Belgian and German governments agreed in 1903 to improve the railway connections between the Kingdom of Belgium and the German Empire. To this end, Belgium planned a freight bypass railway from Brussels to Aachen. This was shorter than the existing one and had less gradient. Since there was strong resistance to the route in Liège and Verviers because the cities feared for the quality of their rail connections, the Belgian government refrained from implementing it.
