This shaft cave in the White Jura is about 80m deep. Speleologists also speak of a depth of 54 meters. Large sections of the 2 to 6 meter wide shaft consist of smooth limestone walls. It was created before today's Tiefental existed. As a result of karstification, the Wollenloch does not carry any water to the bottom. An underground connection to the brickworks about 1.8 km away is suspected.
First the Albverein (around 1895) explored the hole. After 1945 there was a "Woollenloch Club". In October 1949, a member fell fatally.
To this day, daring cavers climb aboard again and again.
Today a high fence encloses the site. Inside the fence is the concrete base of the winch, which used to be used to lower people down and up again. Outside the fence lies the foundation of the former hut, which is long gone
