The system was built around 1935 and ensures a stable water level in the upper reaches of the river. To the west of the Nordfeld lock, the water level still fluctuates with the tide. At the same time, the structure protected the towns in the hinterland from storm surges that pushed the water of the North Sea inland. This task was taken over in 1972 by the Eider barrier at the mouth of the river

Unfortunately, the crossing of the lock system is not possible with a tandem, because the overpass is fenced and has too tight curves for a long wheel.
Otherwise you can integrate the lock but great in bike rides, both sides of the Eider.

Nice industrial monument - on the other hand, we did not find a meaningful bike path, but only a little looked around, but which was interesting (fishermen and good overview of the area).
