The water that comes out of the shell limestone contains a lot of dissolved limestone. Carbon dioxide is extracted from the water by the moss and other vegetation, and the evaporation also increases the saturation of the water until it is over-saturated and the lime is precipitated as sintered lime or lime tuff. So one can understand that the rocks over which the waterfall plunges into the Glatt were partly built by the latter himself.
