"The Lion Gate forms the entrance to Rosenhöhe. Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig had it built for the 25th anniversary of the artists' colony in 1927. It consists of six clinker pillars designed by Albin Müller, on which six lion sculptures created by Bernhard Hoetger in 1914 were positioned. The gates between the The pillars are decorated with relief panels that the Darmstadt artist Hermann Tomada made in 1967 as replicas of Hoetger's originals.
The lion gate goes back to the main portal of the 4th exhibition of the Darmstadt artists' colony in 1914 on the Mathildenhöhe, where the lion sculptures made of cast concrete stood on six double columns made of artificial stone with Ionic capitals. After the exhibition ended, the main portal was dismantled and stored. The pairs of columns, also designed by Albin Müller, were reinstalled in the entrance area of the university stadium in 1939."

An imposing image of traditionally cultivated craftsmanship. There are benches on the forecourt for a short break.
