With the knight's stone at this memorial (directly on the hiking trail from Höningen to Rahnfels), Julius Schmitt was honored during his lifetime in 1915 by the Royal Bavarian Forest Authority for his great services to the Palatinate.Julius Schmitt (January 19, 1863 - October 27, 1918) was a very musical teacher in Frankenthal and a particularly committed person from the Palatinate, who achieved a lot for the Palatinate Forest Association as well as local history and folk music in the Palatinate. The landscape of the Leiningerland and the forest around Höningen were particularly close to his heart. As the founder and chairman of the Frankenthal local group of the Palatinate Forest Association, he established the construction of the Frankenthaler Hütte on the Rahnfels (517 m) and, together with his hiking friends, developed and marked many new hiking trails in the forest around Höningen, which are still looked after by PWV Frankenthal today. His musicality and his commitment to the Palatinate songs (among other things through an association's own book of traveling songs) led to a "revival" of Palatinate folk music in the Palatinate at that time.
He is the author of the double volume "The Wonnegau of the Palatinate and its adjacent forest area", a very high quality hiking guide about the Leiningerland.Source: RHEINPFALZ (FT edition) from October 27, 2018 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Julius Schmitt's death
