Hülchrath Castle is a former electoral Cologne state castle in the Grevenbroich district of Hülchrath in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss. The moated castle on the Gilbach goes back to a castle from the 12th century and has retained a large part of its medieval structure. The history of the complex illustrates very well the typical development of an aristocratic residence in the Rhineland: Through continuous growth, a wooden motte changed to a two-part moated castle in the Renaissance to a palace complex, which after destruction in the 17th century at the beginning of the 20th century in the style of the Neo-Gothic was rebuilt. In the Middle Ages, the Hülchrather complex was one of the most important state castles in Cologne. The castle complex is now privately owned and is partly used for residential purposes. An inside visit is not possible. For private and insurance reasons, the entire property is only accessible with the permission of the owner. The castle served as a filming location for the fairy tale film Das Wasser des Lebens (2017) and the crime scene Es live der König! from the year 2020.
