Well-paved paths lead past Esslinger Tor on the heights of the Schurwald to the Kernenturm, the highest point of the tour. The Kernerturm was built in 1896 by the Swabian Alb Association as the first observation tower. It is worthwhile to climb the 158 steps to the top, because the observation tower offers a fascinating panoramic view of the Swabian lowlands.
