The knight von Meisenbuge zu Retterode is said to have killed a shepherd at this point in a dispute in 1578. He was sentenced to death but later pardoned. As atonement, he was ordered to set up this stone and to wear a rope around his neck as a sign of the "hanged man" throughout his life.translated by

The stone commemorates a murdered shepherd from Eschenstruth who is said to have been killed by a knight.
