The late Gothic town church of St. Mary and Lawrence emerged from a Romanesque basilica built around 1215.
After the previous building was destroyed by fire in 1429, the Gothic hall church was built in its place by 1499.
The octagonal baroque tower was built in 1685.33 paintings by Johann Panitz from 1640 to 1642 can be seen on the coffered ceiling in the choir. During a restoration in 1963 to 1965, wall paintings by S. Heber from 1638 were also uncovered. The other ceilings and the wooden galleries show Gothic painting from the 19th century. The flattened ribs of the ceiling vault are an architectural rarity. The altarpiece from 1670, depicting Christ on the cross with Mary and John, is one of Johann Finck's most important works. The pulpit and baptismal font date from the middle of the 17th century. The city church has a valuable collection of old books.Source:dresden-und-sachsen.de/dresdner_umland/dippoldiswalde.htm
