The Hotel zum Ritter was built in 1592 by the cloth merchant Carolus (Charles) Belier, who had fled from Valenciennes in Habsburg because of his Protestant faith and settled in the Palatinate. It is the only town house that survived the great city fire of 1693 because it was the only one built of stone.
