The districts Kobern and Gondorf are located on the left bank of the Moselle about 17 kilometers from Koblenz and about 33 kilometers from Cochem. Neighboring communities are moselaufwärts Lehmen and moselabwärts Winningen. On the other side of the Moselle lie Niederfell and Dieblich.
Kobern and Gondorf lie on the impact slope of the Dieblicher Moselbogen on the alluvial surface of several streams discharging from the Maifeld and on the slope ascending to the Maifeld. Due to the low altitude, the historic center of Kobern is often affected by flooding.

The ruin above the village of Kobern is the Niederburg. On the same mountain ridge is the upper castle with Matthias chapel about 50 m higher.

The Tatzelwurm fountain on the Kobener market square owes its name to a mythical creature,
that - half lion, half lindworm - once lived hidden in the tunnels of Kobern-Gondorf.
