The impressive sandstone bridge structure was built in 1913-1914 for the Gelstertalbahn. The route ran from Eichenberg via Großalmerode to Walburg.
The Gelstertalbahn was opened in the wartime year of 1915 and used for passenger and freight transport until 1973. In 1983, freight transport was also discontinued.
