The tomb was built after the death of Sultan Ahmed I, who commissioned the Blue Mosque and died of typhus in 1617.
Construction of the mausoleum began in 1617 under Sultan Mustafa I (Ahmed I's brother) and was completed in 1619 under Sultan Osman II (Ahmed I's son).
The architect of the mausoleum was Sedefkar Mehmed Agha, who also built the Blue Mosque.
Today, the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed I is managed by Istanbul's Tombs and is open to visitors as a museum. It is one of the most visited and largest mausoleums in the city.
