The former double rampart dates from the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, Soest was the largest and most important city in Westphalia, which had acquired prosperity through the fertile and spring-rich landscape of the Soest Börde and its location on Hellweg. On the inner wall with the about 20 meter wide moat, a ditch that was only temporarily filled with water, kitchen gardens and an outer wall with a narrow ditch followed. In 1586 the outer wall was leveled and the trench filled. Today the areas are built over, and only a few places can be seen remains of the old system. After the inner wall fell into disrepair around 1800, it was restored from 1818 to 1827. A promenade lined with trees was laid out. Since then, around 600 linden trees have stood on the six Soest wall sections.

The ramparts and graves form the largest urban green space today.
