The Kitanomaru Garden was once the northernmost part of Edo Castle and formerly served as a residence for members of the extended Tokugawa family who ruled as the Shogune in Japan. Today it is a lush forest park where relics from the Edo period and other more modern sites can be seen, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and the Science Museum.
Although the Edo Castle burned down in 1873 during a fire, there are still two original Edo-style gates that welcome guests at the entrance to the park. Stroll along the winding hiking trails and keep an eye out for the impressive collection of cherry trees around the Chidorigafuchi trench, which fill the area with delicate pink flowers all spring.
