The Toshogu Shinto shrine, enthroned at the end of a row of stone lanterns, has been installed in Ueno Park since 1627 and is dedicated to the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). After Tokugawa died, the Toshogu shrines (literally "the god of the east sun") flourished across Japan, and the daimyo (vassals of the shogun) have a duty to honor the memory of the first Tokugawa shogun. Each of the lanterns in this large Tokugawa park comes from a donation from a daimyo, whose name is engraved on the base.
